Carol accepted the invitation and began what she called her biggest romance in life. Her maternal grandparents raised Marie until Anton remarried when Marie was still very young. Marie was born in the Town of Mosel, Wisconsin, on January 1, 1922, the daughter of Anton J. Wagner and Mary Zimmermann Wagner. Sister Margaretta was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Henrietta Ehrlich; her brothers Raymond, Leon, Richard and Robert Ehrlich and her sister Marjorie Harty; and also by three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. She moved with her family to Evanston, Illinois, where she attended St. Nicholas Grade School, staffed by the Sisters of St. Agnes.
